Recently I bought myself an expensive but very useful piece of immunity. Immunity from free rescuing.
Classic setup: a cassation appeal, a flooding case beaten up by two lower courts, serious money at stake. My professional instinct kicked in.
I open the case file, start pulling at the threads — and produce something excellent. In two days I build a complete strategy: I find procedural landmines, tear apart the inspection report on timing grounds, and pull out the main trump card. The director of the expert organisation that conducted the judicial examination has been stripped of accreditation and is under criminal investigation for forging a degree.
Bingo.
I send a detailed legal audit with a risk assessment (70–30 in our favour) and a fee proposal.
You know what I got back? Silence. The person never even said “thanks, I’ll think about it.”
What happens when you give away a free legal audit
I made a classic mistake: I handed the client a complete roadmap — with names, dates, and methodology. A bad-faith client in that position takes the document to a cheaper “craftsman lawyer” down the street and says: “Turn this into a filing for twenty thousand roubles.” The craftsman still won’t be able to play the case the way an architect designed it — but that is a different story.
I was not upset. I calculated two days at the market rate for a lawyer with 23 years of experience — and realised I had just paid for a very expensive seminar.
Three lessons about the price of expert legal work
Time is worth more than money. Money can be earned or won in court. Hours spent at a screen solving someone else’s problem are gone for good.
An expert’s speed has a price. A fast answer is not quick reflexes. It is decades of practice, a trained eye for the opponent’s weak points, and a ready solution within hours. That is exactly what people pay for.
Legal architecture cannot be copied. Seeing hidden connections where others see a pile of documents is not a skill that transfers with the audit text.
